Erhitas Dove
Erhitas was known as a mathematician and politician, but those were not his only attributes. In 350 BC, Erhitas constructed a wooden pigeon that operating on steam or perhaps levers, had the ability to flap its wings and fly through the air.
Silver Swan
A mechanical device in the shape of a swan, this invention has an arrangement of rotating rods, glass, and rails which add to the illusion that there is running water and moving fish below it. The Swan is also a music box, and its motions of wings, head, and beak are timed to the music. The Swan is displayed today at the Bowes Museum in England.
Robot Men of Pierre Jaquet-Droz
These miniature people feature moving hands and eyes that follow the task they are completing. Writing with a pencil, breathing, and playing a small piano are all motions they can perform.
Vaucanson Digesting Duck
This gold-plated copper duck relied on a complicated system of cranes and came to perform the eating process; a flexible, adaptable tubing went from the mouth through the stomach to allow the food to “digest” and be processed through the bowels of the duck.
